Do we really land on moon?

Yes we did!  When back in 1969's?  We've been there for 7 times.

It is mankind's greatest achievements yet.

Why do people didn't believe we did it?  There are several reasons:

The photo and video!

People taught that the video was filmed somewhere in Nevada.  This is very un-true.

One of the original the video streamed from moon to Australia and was kept in Curtin University of Technology where I studied.

Second people taught that we only managed to get there once!

No, we've been there 6 times!  However, the most famous mission is the Apollo 11 because Apollo 11 is the the first mission that travel to the moon.  Remember, millions of people travelled to America, however the world remembers that only Columbus is the one who travelled to "America", well technically it was not America.

How come American manages to land on moon on the 1st attempt?

Well, it is not America's vehicle that first landed on moon, it is the Soviets!  American is the first man who landed on moon.

Before launching the Apollo 11, American made a 2 attempts to land 2 unmanned shuttle, dubbed Apollo 8 and Apollo 9.

FYI, we also have visited mars back in 1970s!  It was on Mariner which launched in 1969 and Viking missions which was launched in 1975.

1969's computer is not powerful enough to do the moon calculation.

This is not true!  The 1969's desktop computer is not powerful, however the mainframe of 1969 is very powerful.  Mainframe computer's processing power is 20 years ahead Desktop's, as I have tried myself.  I render 3D images for university my assignment, it requires 1 hour per frame on a P4 1.8 GHz machine.  However my university's mainframe can render the image in 1 seconds.

Some people even thing that 1969 computer is about as powerful as today's calculator.  No way, they can't be compared to a calculator, because they can be programmed to do a task while calculator can't.  Even the 20 years old is capable to do task that can be done by the latest and state of the art Intel i7.

Older computer only requires more time to do the task because it is slower.  How can it be?  Simple: because almost all computer available today uses the good old von Neumann architecture.  Incompatibilities do exists, however they can be fixed as long as the basic architecture is the same.

FYI, Internet is invented 1960's.

Why don't we travel to the moon every year or so?

Whatever the American got on the first 7 journey to the moon is not worth the money and risk.  Therefore, the program was postponed, until today that space travel is commonplace that people now create luxury liners to travel the space, Soyuz rockets can be booked for flight to ISS and ISS has a super expensive quarter for the big bosses of multinational company to visit.

Moreover, probably they have made another discovery on moon that make it worth to travel, may be uranium.  Well, in my opinion having a base on moon to reach Mars is inefficient compared to have a flying star base on Earth's high orbit.  However, since moon contains uranium, they can just mine and process the uranium on the spot to refuel the star ship.

More recent discoveries find that there is water on moon, which will make the moon travel and establishing base on moon make sense.

Why do we have to built a brand new rocket to return to the moon?

People wonders why do American have to built and test a new rocket to get man back to the moon?  You can see this analogy for an explanation:

  • Columbus did manage to America back in 16th Century sailing an wooden sail.  He discovers America and then go back to Europe in one piece.  Remember, I did not say here safely, which means there are several accidents and incidents that happens on board including lost of fleet.

  • Columbus did not even know the route to America, but he eventually discovers and manages to reach American coastline.

  • Titanic, a cruise ship with 300 years advancement in sailing technology compared to Columbus's Santa Maria.  In 20th Century travels from Europe to America.  Titanic's at that time boasts sectional hull design which is state of the art of the time.  When there was leak on one part of the hull, it can self isolate therefore the water stays there and not sinking the ship.

  • In contrast with Columbus, Titanic's captain know the route where to travel, however Titanic was not properly tested before its inauguration day.  It sink on the maiden voyage and did not manage to get to America.

  • The good old Columbus's Santa Maria was not designed for travelling in safety and comfort as Titanic does.  They are of different design and used for different goal.  Just as we need in moon mission.

  • If we are going to the moon, we certainly can bring the old Saturn V rocket and flew that to the moon.  There is no doubt that the old Saturn V can reach the moon.  However we wanted to do it more economically and safety with different purpose.

Safety

  • Saturn V was plagued with many problem, and Neil Armstrong even manually control the rocket to the moon.  Resulting several miles drifts from designated landing site.  Today we wanted to land there on the exact position.  Apollo 13 mission even fails and they return to Earth, manually.  Lucky they manage to arrive Earth without any casualties.  This count to 20% failure rate of Apollo mission, something that NASA wanted to avoid.

  • NASA obviously wanted to reduce failure rate down to less than 1% or about the same fail rate as space shuttle mission.  This means they require newer technology and more testings to be done.

Mission

  • Once we arrive to the moon just for exploring the moon, therefore they carry only things necessary to get there.  Today we are going there to built a human colony on moon as a launching base to Mars.  Moon is rich in uranium and there are water there.  Which mean a self sustaining space station on moon is possible.

  • Therefore we need something that can carry more loads.

Why do American took so long to prepare new vehicle, called Constellation project to reach the moon?

Our common sense said: if Nasa wanted to fly to the moon again, they can take the old Apollo series rockets (Saturn V), clean it, fuel it, and fly it to the moon then mission accomplished!

No way man!

The operational cost of Constellation project will be a lot cheaper compared to the original Apollo series.  Moreover Constellation project is aimed to fly to the moon, refuel and go to Mars.  This is what the old Apollo rocket can't do.  Constellation project design a cruise ship that can bring month of supplies for the astronauts.

Unlike the Apollo project, the astronauts in Constellation project will have a comfortable quarter and hot meal.

People without science background probably have difficulties understanding why do we have to start all over, however sometimes it is better if we start a program from the scratch, instead of refurbishing and retrofitting existing programs.

I still don't believe the lunar landing mission.

Here I told you how to proof it yourself that we've visited the moon:

The easiest proof is by finding the leftover from the astronauts, there are 7 of them on the moon.  You can do it with high power telescope from Earth.  Anyway Professor Carrol Alley from University of Maryland fires lasers to the mirror that was left there by Neil Armstrong to calculate the distance from Earth to Moon

Well, Prof Alley discovers that moon is moving away from Earth, so if we wanted to reach there again, we must be quick before she moves too far and out of reach!

So, why don't we believe?

It is probably another people wanted to find publicity or anti American.

For more information, you can open Apollo Moan Landing Hoax conspiracy theories.

Anyway, Lunar Landing did not belongs to American's, but it belongs mankind's!
